Chapter 12 covers features that are common to all sensory receptors (sense organs). The receptors are formed either by the terminal branches of an axon or by specialized sensory cells that transmit the message to nerve terminals. A sensory unit is a sensory neuron with all its ramifications in the periphery and in the central nervous system. The receptive field of the sensory neuron is the part of the body or the environment from which it samples information. Transduction mechanisms translate the stimulus into a receptor potential that may elicit an action potential. Receptors are classified by their adequate stimulus as mechanoreceptor, thermoreceptor, and chemoreceptor. Receptors also differ with regard to how rapidly they adapt and by the site from which they collect information.
