This chapter provides an overview of the prevalence, pathophysiology, assessment, and clinical management of dyspnea, also known as breathlessness. Written for the advanced practice registered nurse who cares for people with advanced disease, it describes the current understanding of the pathophysiology of dyspnea, potential causative factors, and evidence-based pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management. Assessment of dyspnea is outlined using a biopsychosocial approach. .Evidence-based pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions are offered.
