Vector-borne diseases are especially sensitive to climate change because insect vectors are cold-blooded and therefore susceptible to subtle changes in temperature and humidity. Examples of climate-sensitive diseases covered in this chapter include mosquito-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus disease, Japanese encephalitis, malaria, and Chikungunya fever; and tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis. Public health intervention of vector-borne disease transmission consists primarily of vaccination and vector control. Effective programs require decision-support systems driven by sound surveillance data to predict problems, verify and track their occurrence, implement control measures in a timely manner, and evaluate the efficacy of intervention.
