The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the pediatric brain and assess for intracranial pathology has become standard of care when the patient has developmental delay, seizures, or other symptom referable to the central nervous system. The increased imaging comes with a concomitant challenge to the pediatric neuroimager: distinguishing normal developmental stages from true pathology. This seemingly simple distinction is sometimes one of the hardest tasks of image interpretation since the normal MR appearance may differ dramatically from that of an adult and what constitutes normal changes rapidly during brain development. Such is the case with the maturation of the white matter, a vital process known as myelination. This atlas contains over 13,000 high-quality, multiplanar MR images that both illustrate and describe normal brain myelination, maturation, and anatomy in order to provide decision support for the radiologist during the diagnostic process.
