This textbook on palliative social work is a companion volume to the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine and the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing. To that end, this chapter will accomplish the following:

Consumers who have life-threatening illness are vulnerable by virtue of their illnesses, yet factors such as mental illness, social isolation, homelessness, immigration, and intellectual and developmental disability increase their vulnerability.

Individuals from vulnerable populations have unique and complex care needs and present additional challenges for social workers.

Social workers who care for individuals from vulnerable populations will need to work in concert with a myriad of care providers from different disciplines and settings, such as hospitals, shelters, community groups, and other mental health practitioners.
