This textbook on palliative social work is a companion volume to the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine and the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing. To that end, this chapter will accomplish the following:

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was first identified in the early 1980s, with a few cases of rare and specific diseases.

Initially affecting gay men in the major urban cities of New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, it is now a chronic pandemic, affecting millions worldwide.

Social workers have been at the forefront of caring for people with HIV since the beginning of the epidemic, providing care, organizing support, initiating education and awareness, and changing policy at all levels.

This chapter reviews the interface of social work, HIV disease, and palliation, providing interventions for the future of that interface.
