This textbook on palliative social work is a companion volume to the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine and the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing. To that end, this chapter will accomplish the following:

Support group participation can increase one's sense of self-worth, purpose, and control.

For many, social support and interconnectedness are helpful in managing life-threatening illness, caregiving responsibilities, and/or loss.

Participation in groups allows not only for the participant to receive and benefit from support and education but also to gain something from providing this to others.

Group leaders determine group composition and facilitate group process to maximize benefits to participants.
