Clinical practice guidelines provide recommendations for the management of atrial fibrillation (AF) based on the results of clinical studies and evolving opinions by experts. There have been substantial developments in the management of AF in the past decade, and therefore several major updates of the guidelines have been published covering advances in the prevention of thromboembolic events, rate control, and rhythm control. This chapter summarizes fundamental recommendations for the management of AF in the latest practice guidelines of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and Heart Rhythm Society, in addition to other related societies. Effective management of AF is critical to prevent morbidity and mortality in AF. Practice guidelines provide recommendations with the goal of ensuring optimal care of our patients.
