All suicidal persons warrant emotional support, the nature and intensity of which depend on the presence and type of mental disorder. Dialectical behaviour therapy is specifically effective for those with borderline personality disorder. Other treatments include cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), problem-solving therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MCBT). The risk of dependence needs to be balanced between encouraging independence and being perceived as rejecting. Broader non-pharmacological approaches include crisis centres and volunteer organizations.
