All mental disorders are associated with a higher risk of suicide. Mood disorders, schizophrenia and substance abuse are strongly associated with suicide. Co-morbidity is common. There is an inherited basis to some suicides. Serotonin and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis abnormalities are associated with suicide. Biological factors lack specificity for suicide. There is an interaction between genetic susceptibility and the environment.
