The stress-diathesis model is a useful framework to conceptualize suicidal behaviours. Psychological autopsy studies demonstrate that 80–90% of suicides had a diagnosable mental disorder at the time of death. Population Attributable Risk analyses highlight the importance of mental disorders. The presence of even multiple risk factors is not sufficient to adequately explain suicide.
