The use of some psychotropic medications in those who are suicidal has been controversial. If there is a mental disorder for which there is evidence of effective pharmacological treatment, then that treatment should be offered. There are persuasive studies demonstrating the effectiveness of antidepressant, mood stabilizer and anti-psychotic medications in reducing suicidality, including suicide, in patients with mood and schizophrenic disorders.
