Glucocorticoids are anchor drugs of therapeutic regimens in most inflammatory and autoimmune rheumatic conditions and vasculitides, for reasons of effectiveness, versatility, and low cost. In this chapter on glucocorticoid therapy in rheumatology, basic mechanisms and pharmacological effects, indications, adverse advents, monitoring, and new developments are discussed. Throughout, emphasis is placed on clinically relevant implications for daily clinical practice.
