Partial hospitalization (PH) as a treatment modality for psychiatric disorders has evolved over more than 60 years now. PH fills the wide gap between inpatient or full-time hospitalization (FTH) on the one hand and outpatient or community mental health care on the other. For patients, carers, and professional staff, PH has the potential to offer more than low-frequency outpatient visits while at the same time it prevents the disadvantages of a hospital admission.

In this chapter I discuss some of the main issues regarding the current status and the future development of PH: history, development, conceptual issues and definition, different types of PH programmes, (cost-) effectiveness of PH in comparison with FTH and outpatient treatment, selection criteria, treatment models, and therapeutic factors. In the last section I review the place of this component in the total of psychiatric services.
