Chapter 17 focuses on experiences of sexual violence in refugees and asylum seekers. Many refugees and asylum seekers experience rape and sexual violence, because they are fleeing armed conflict and civil unrest, or because they come from societies and communities in which gender based violence (including homophobic violence) and oppression are common. Sexual violence is only one form of persecution, trauma, and losses (including dislocation) reported by asylum seekers, which cumulatively impact on the individual’s health and social functioning. The adverse impact on health ranges from the immediate to the long term, with victims experiencing problems with both physical and mental health.
