Chapter 13 describes the nature of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and considers how it may apply to people who are refugees and asylum seekers. The main empirical treatments for PTSD in general populations are outlined, and the evidence in refugee and asylum seeker populations summarized. The chapter goes on to provide some guidance regarding clinical practice, such as identifying PTSD, what initial interventions should be provided and by whom, and when to refer on to more specialized services. An established phasic model of intervention is used as the framework for such clinical decision making.
