Chapter 7 attempts to further the understanding of the interplay between policy construction and practical outcome by steering a story through the history of refugee policy making, including a historical overview and recent events using the example of the UK within Europe as a model, the legal framework that has evolved in the UK through a variety of Acts of Parliament, delivering policies in response to events from the post-Cold War world to the realities of the early part of the 21st century and how the cosmopolitan aspiration of the original ideas for dealing with refugees often come into conflict with national self-interest, followed by some concrete policy examples of dealing with mental health issues in a variety of acute refugee settings.
