Chapter 2 discusses the explosion in interest in the mental health of refugees and internally displaced people across the past three decades, and that much of this interest has been in documenting rates of disorder as defined by Western biomedical diagnostic systems and in applying therapies similarly developed by Western medicine and psychology. However, for more effective treatment, clearer understanding of the overlap of these Western diagnoses with the idioms of distress popular in particular refugee groups, and a clearer understanding of local treatmentseeking behaviours, is critical for developing more effective health care for these populations.
