Refugees and asylum seekers are individuals who are seeking to settle elsewhere other than their country of origin largely due to persecution due to their political, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation. The definitions are often complicated and dictated by the legal system of the new country. Never before has culture, race, and ethnicity been so relevant and important in the mental health field and/or in psychiatric practice, as it is at the present time, and in this chapter we propose to set the scene.
