A brief history and the development of the GCT are provided. Its forerunners, specificity theory, summation theory, and intensity theory as well as the Hebbian notion of cell-assemblies and reverberating circuits are described. Melzack and Loeser’s proposal of the existence of neuronal pools and a central pattern generating mechanism to explain phantom pain is outlined. The Neuromatrix theory of Melzack, Donald Price’s Model, A.D. Craig’s notion of pain as a homeostatic emotion, and the authors concept of a pain processing system are present.
