Percutaneous tracheostomy is a common procedure in the intensive care unit, and ultrasound can be used to improve the safety and success of the procedure. This chapter reviews the role of a pre-procedural ultrasound examination and describes the technique and the normal sonoanatomy. The use of ultrasound to guide tracheal cannulation during percutaneous tracheostomy and crycothyrotomy is also described.
