Patients with symptoms or signs suggesting rapidly progressive damage to the spinal cord or multiple nerve roots need an urgent MRI scan (or, occasionally, a myelogram) of the involved area of the spinal canal. Back and neck pain can stem from spinal compression that can be caused by structural lesions.
