The chromosomal syndromes are due to numerical, structural, or functional abnormalities of chromosomes. These include numerary changes of chromosomes in some or all cells, structural rearrangements, deletions or duplications of parts of chromosomes, and, in some cases, changes in small segments of the chromosomes as in fragile X syndrome. The most common chromosomal syndromes are discussed in this chapter.
