The human genome consists of approximately 25,000 genes that are encoded within the nuclear DNA and embedded in the chromosome. Mitochondria are the only cytoplasmic organelles that have their own DNA. Nuclear gene and mitochondrial inheritance are discussed in this chapter. Basic genetic terms are defined.
