The basal ganglia are a group of nuclei connected by circuits that help select appropriate actions and other behaviors. They promote the sequential activation of movements or behaviors in response to stimuli. These movements become reinforced over time, eventually becoming habits. The anatomy and circuitry of the basal ganglia are reviewed in this chapter.
