The OSCE is an important hurdle for a health practitioner, and even the first attempt induces anxiety—this anxiety is normal, improves performance and increases the chance of success. In a few people the anxiety will be overwhelming even during the first ever attempt, and will become a hindrance to success. Once a candidate has failed the OSCE once (for whatever reason) they will naturally feel more anxious in their subsequent attempts, and this anxiety can become a problem. This chapter helps the candidate to reframe their anxiety into something more constructive and positive. It teaches how to understand underlying cognitions, and suggests practical exercises for the candidate to work through, in order to reframe their anxiety into something more positive and manageable.
