Conventional treatments for preschoolers with ADHD are still emerging, are not completely effective or risk-free, and may be unacceptable to many. Therefore, parents may turn to complementary and alternative treatments (CATs). Currently, only four published studies exist on CATs specific to preschool ADHD. We discuss these studies and the downward extension of research on 5- to 18-year-olds with ADHD for four categories of ingestible (i.e., orally administered) CATs and eight categories of noningestible CATs. Although support for CATs in preschoolers is limited, we make recommendations based on available evidence for preschoolers and school-aged children with ADHD and the SECS (Sensible, Easy, Cheap, and Safe) criterion.
