Chapter 7 examines the evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches to the management and treatment of the range of psychiatric disorders encountered in mental health services, covering anxiety and affective disorders, psychoses, eating disorders, substance misuse, trauma-related conditions, medically unexplained symptoms, disorders of sexual function, paraphilias, gender dysphoria and intersex conditions, intellectual disability, and dementia. The chapter commences with an overview of the historical relationship between psychotherapy and psychiatry, explores the challenges encountered by each of the three main therapeutic modalities (psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioural, and systemic) in their integration with psychiatry, and offers dual training in medical psychotherapy as one possible solution towards developing a truly integrated psychotherapeutic psychiatry. This is illustrated in the subsequent section which describes the relationship between psychotherapy and medication and offers an integrated model of psychotherapy and prescribing, including consideration of the patient’s use and experience of psychotherapy. The clinical applications, empirical evidence of efficacy, and training required for the relevant psychotherapies for each psychiatric condition are then reviewed in detail.
