Chapter 3 describes general therapeutic competencies, and frameworks within which they reside, that would apply to the practice of any model of therapy. It introduces concepts such as the ‘therapeutic alliance’, and a list of competencies and domains of knowledge, including professional, ethical, and cultural, are detailed and discussed. The chapter looks at how to work to engage patients and manage emotional distress in the context of a developmental perspective on professional competencies; this is paralleled with the development of the human mind throughout the life cycle. It presents vignettes to illustrate such competencies in clinical practice. It also discusses managing endings and risk, and the supervision process.
