A 32-year-old man is brought into the emergency department as a trauma call. He was a cyclist who had crossed a red traffic light and was hit by a car. He was not wearing a helmet and landed directly on his head. He was immediately unable to move his legs and his spine was immobilized by the attending ambulance crew. He has an open fracture of his left tibia.
