Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) represent a broad spectrum of ischaemic myocardial events associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, thus making them a major public health problem worldwide. Almost all ACS are due to coronary atherosclerosis, generally with superimposed coronary thrombosis. An accurate diagnosis has life-saving implications and requires the detailed assessment of a patient’s history, physical examination, 12-lead ECG findings, and cardiac biomarker assays. A careful early risk stratification is mandatory and permits the identification of the moderate- and high-risk patients who gain the greatest benefit from potent antithrombotic therapies and early revascularization. To optimize the treatment of ACS, adherence to the current guidelines significantly improves clinical outcomes by reducing mortality and morbidity.
