Hypercholesterolaemia and risk assessment
• In patients with established vascular disease or very high risk (secondary prevention), the aim should be to reduce total cholesterol (TC) to <5 mmol/L and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to <3 mmol/L.
• Ideal levels are TC <4 mmol/L and LDL-C <2 mmol/L, but these may not be achievable in everybody.
• In patients with no known vascular disease (primary prevention), the decision to treat depends on the individual ’ s risk profile, but the targets are the same.
• A holistic approach includes assessment of other risk factors as well, such as hypertension, smoking, diabetes, or obesity.
