This chapter addresses a group of syndromes that, unless recognized and treated promptly, will cause unnecessary suffering for the patient and family. Emphasis has been given to the epidemiology and basic pathophysiology of each syndrome, as well as diagnostic assessment. Providing this information, although by necessity limited in detail, enables the palliative care nurse to explain to the patient and/or family why particular symptoms are occurring and why a particular management approach is being suggested.
