The proposition that addiction is a species of compulsion is popular in addiction theory and psychiatric research. This chapter examines an influential account of the cognitive neuroscience of compulsive drug seeking to learn if cognitive neuroscience can warrant the attribution of pathology to addiction. We argue that without invoking norms of autonomous agency and self-control, prudential or evaluative norms which themselves are not proper parts of brain science, no attribution of pathology to compulsive or addictive behaviour is warranted.
