The antennal lobes (ALs) in the brain of the moth Manduca sexta have become well-established models for studies of olfactory information processing. This chapter summarizes findings about the functional organization of neural microcircuits and glial cells associated with glomeruli in the AL of Manduca. Glomerular output activity carried by uniglomerular projection neurons (uPNs) is shaped through integration of primary-afferent inputs, lateral and feed-forward inhibition by GABAergic local interneurons, and modulation by centrifugal neurons. Concerted action within AL circuitry enables uPNs to follow closely the spatiotemporal dynamics of stimuli in a natural odor plume. Synchronous firing of uPNs enhances the output of individual glomeruli and coding of behaviorally significant odors among glomeruli.
