The cerebellar cortex contains ten distinct types of neuronal element arranged with geometrical beauty. The major signal flow pathway consists forward connections through mossy fibers, granule cells and their parallel fiber axons, and Purkinje cells, whereas climbing fibers convey signals directly to Purkinje cells. These pathways incorporate synaptic plasticity, LTP and LTD, as memory elements. Information processing capability of the cerebellar cortical circuit has been modeled with Simple Perceptron, adaptive filter, or other types of learning network. The cerebellar microcircuit as such is now thought to provide an adaptive mechanism for motor and autonomic functions in the spinal cord/brainstem and provide an internal model mechanism for the cerebral cortex to perform skillful voluntary movements or certain cognitive functions.
