Ayurveda is translated as the “science or knowledge of life.” Life, according to Ayurveda, is the inseparable and integral union of mind, body, and spirit. The key in this union is balance. A healthy life is not just one without disease. Health involves a balanced state of the three doshas, the seven bodily tissues, the wastes created by the body, and the digestive fire; it also involves a joyful and content state of the senses, mind, and spirit; and finally, true health exists when one is centered in his or her true self (Lad 1984). This chapter is a brief overview of this healing system, with special attention given to the health of women.
