Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with extraordinarily high heritability. Intense efforts are now focusing on identifying genetic causes of autism. Animal models provide essential translational tools to investigate hypotheses about the biological causes of autism spectrum disorders, including candidate genes, synaptic and neuroanatomical abnormalities, environmental toxins, prenatal insults, and immune dysfunctions. Robust phenotypes in model organisms offer translational tools to identify causes and to seek putative treatments for autism. This chapter discusses the most promising mouse models of autism and strategies to phenotype new genetic lines of mice.
